The Tino Rangatiratanga flag is a symbol of Māori sovereignty and self-determination. It is often referred to as the Māori sovereignty flag and represents the concept of tino rangatiratanga—the Māori right to self-governance and autonomy, as outlined in the Treaty of Waitangi.
The flag consists of three key elements:

  1. Black background: Symbolizes the Māori people and their land, representing the whenua (land).
  2. White spiral (koru): A stylized Māori koru, representing life, growth, and the connection between the past, present, and future. It is often associated with the unfolding of a fern frond, symbolizing new beginnings and evolution.
  3. Red and white stripes: The flag includes a red and white color scheme that represents the blood of Māori ancestors and the enduring relationship between the Māori people and the land.
  • The flag is 150cm wide x 90cm tall.
  • Made with 100% polyester and environmentally friendly ink.
  • Comes with fastenings at one end to easily wear as a cape.
