Whakapapa to Papua New Guinea, Morobe Province

The pūtātara was primarily used as a trumpet or signal horn. It was blown to communicate over long distances, especially in the context of warfare or to announce important events, such as the arrival of guests or the start of a ceremony. The sound of the pūtātara could be heard over great distances and was a clear signal to the community of something significant happening.

It was also used during rituals or ceremonies to mark important moments, such as a welcoming ceremony (e.g., pōwhiri) or during a haka (war dance).
